It is not uncommon to have stubborn fat deposits develop around the hips, waist, thighs, and other areas of the body. Despite patients’ best efforts, the fat is very resistant to dieting and exercise. To address these problem areas, Dr. Gregory T. Mesna offers liposuction at our Edina practice, serving Minnetonka and the surrounding Minneapolis-St. Paul area.
The basic liposuction procedure is accomplished by first creating small incisions around the area to be treated. The incisions will be placed as inconspicuously as possible, leaving very little scarring once they have healed. The fat cells must be broken up, using one of the techniques described below, before the fat can be extracted through a thin tube, known as a cannula. Once the desired amount of fat has been removed, the incisions are closed and the patient is dressed in a compression garment to provide support and minimize swelling as the tissues heal.
There are several liposuction techniques that our Edina and Minnetonka patients have available to help them achieve their aesthetic goals. The popular tumescent and wet techniques involve the injection of a water solution into the area to be treated prior to the removal of fat. This helps to break down the walls of the fat cells, making them easier to remove, and has the added benefits of reducing pain and bleeding, as the injected solution includes an anesthetic and a vasoconstrictor. Newer methods, such as ultrasound and power-assisted liposuction, liposculpting, and liposelection are also options that we offer. Dr. Mesna will discuss these techniques during the consultation, explaining the benefits and limitations of each, and determine which is most appropriate for the patient’s body type and individual goals.

Although liposuction is effective at removing fat deposits, it is not a substitute for weight loss. Good candidates for liposuction are of a healthy, stable weight, but have isolated pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Good skin elasticity also contributes to improved results.
Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and lung disorders increase the risks that are associated with liposuction. Patients with these health problems may not be good candidates for the procedure.
After liposuction, the patient will wear a compression garment that will minimize swelling and provide support to tissues during the healing process. Soreness, bruising, and temporary numbness in the treated area are all common in the period immediately following surgery and will subside over time. The length of time needed to fully recover from liposuction will depend on the area of the body that was treated and how much fat was removed.
Liposuction can help our patients feel much more confident and comfortable in their own bodies. Many of our patients choose to combine this procedure with a tummy tuck, breast enhancement, or another procedure to achieve a more dramatic makeover.
