Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help people achieve and maintain a lean body and a pleasing shape. Unfortunately, there is a limit to what diet and exercise alone can accomplish, especially as age advances. Stomach muscles that have been stretched out of shape by pregnancy or weight gain often cannot be restored to their former fitness by exercise alone. There are also many areas of the body where stubborn fat deposits develop that are very resistant to dieting and exercise. Dr. Gregory T. Mesna offers exceptional body contouring procedures such as abdominoplasty and liposuction so his Minneapolis-area patients can address these problem areas and achieve the look they desire.
The shape of the abdomen depends not only on the skin and fat near the surface but also on the condition of the muscle layer underneath the skin and fat. If the abdominal skin and muscles have become stretched due to pregnancy, significant changes in weight, or the effects of time, removing the fat alone is not enough to produce a smooth, firm appearance. Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a procedure to remove the excess skin and often tighten the muscles in the tummy area to restore its firmness and shape.

Dr. Mesna begins the abdominoplasty procedure by making an incision in the abdominal area. Depending on the degree of abdominal laxity and the amount of skin to be removed, the incision may be only a few inches in length, extend from hip to hip, or even extend around the waist. Then, by separating the skin from the underlying tissues, the muscles can be exposed and tightened to restore a more ideal shape. If small pockets of excess fat are present, they may be removed with liposuction as part of the abdominoplasty procedure. Once this is complete, the skin is repositioned and the incision is closed. The scar that results from abdominoplasty surgery is usually significant in size, but easily concealed, as the incision is made very low across the abdomen, just above the pubic bone.
During recovery from abdominoplasty, soreness and swelling are common. It is important to remember that the abdominal muscles are responsible for much more than most of us are aware of and even simple movements may be difficult for some time. Taking adequate time to heal and gradually increasing activity over a period of two to four weeks will contribute to successful results.

Most people are aware that a healthy diet and exercise routine can reduce excess weight and contribute to a lean, sculpted shape. However, there are many places on the body where stubborn fat deposits may be difficult to reduce with diet and exercise.
There are many areas on the body where liposuction can be performed, but the most common are the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs and buttocks. Men also often have excess fat to be removed from the chest area to create a flatter and more masculine contour.
Liposuction scars are small and easily concealed, because incisions only need to be large enough to allow passage of a cannula (a thin metal tube) into the fatty tissue to be removed. When liposuction is performed in combination with another procedure, such as abdominoplasty, access can often be gained through the existing surgical incisions.
The amount of time needed to recover from liposuction will depend on the area treated and how much fat was removed. To learn more about the specific techniques Dr. Mesna uses please visit our liposuction page or contact our Minneapolis-area practice.
